Breast Reduction Surgery Offers Wealth of Benefits, Study Shows

Ava Lawson | September 10, 2013 | Posted in Breast Augmentation

Breast reduction surgery is one of the most commonly requested breast cosmetic surgery procedures, and according to a new study the results offer improvements in several areas of health and quality of life. Published in the medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the study sought to evaluate the physical, social and psychological benefits of the procedure, and how it impacted patients’ lives. Also known as reduction mammoplasty, the surgery has long been a viable option for women who suffer pain and embarrassment associated with overly large breasts.

Questionnaire documents patient satisfaction with breast reduction outcomes

Led by Dr. Michelle Coriddi of Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University, the researchers surveyed 49 breast reduction patients, 78 percent of whom gave anonymous assessments of their general satisfaction with the outcome. The findings were overwhelmingly positive, with major improvements in all four areas, including breast appearance and psychosocial, sexual and physical well-being.

The questionnaire was based on a 100-point scale, and patients’ satisfaction with breast appearance increased from a 20 before breast surgery, to more than 80 post-operatively. Points given for physical health jumped from 43 to 81, as the procedure relieved persistent discomfort in the neck, back and shoulders.  The study also noted big improvements in sexual contentment, which went from 40 to 78 points, and psychosocial welfare, which soared from 41 up to 84 points.

The results may be encouraging to the thousands of women who suffer low self-esteem and have difficulties exercising and sleeping due to their buxom figures. Not only were patients relieved of pain, they reported sleeping better and having a new-found ability for high-impact activities. “The improvement in physical activity, decrease in costly chronic medical complaints and improvement in overall quality of life indicated by this survey study validates insurance coverage for this procedure,” concluded Dr. Coriddi’s colleagues.  Those who are considering breast reduction surgery in New York should check with their insurance provider – the procedure is typically covered, removing financial obstacles to the path to good health.

What to expect with breast reduction surgery

Depending on the type of reduction mammoplasty needed, breast reduction surgery can last anywhere from two to four hours. A keyhole incision is made around the nipple, from which extra tissue, skin and fat is removed. Sometimes referred to as the “lollipop” breast reduction, this approach yields minimal scarring and is suitable for the majority of patients who need a moderate reduction in size. Following the operation, at least 7 days of rest and abstention from all physical activities is recommended. Bruising and swelling is normal and can last for several weeks, but patients will notice the benefits of breast reduction shortly after surgery – usually within six weeks.
