The demand for breast augmentation in NYC may skyrocket in light of a recent study that found the procedure can boost both sexual satisfaction and arousal among patients. The findings of the study were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) this past October.
Dr. David Reath ASPS Public Education Committee chair said “These findings provide a better understanding of how breast augmentation can affect patients’ sexual health…We know breast augmentation can enhance a woman’s self-image, self-confidence, and quality of life. Sexuality is a significant component to quality of life.”
Breast enhancement has consistently been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the States. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons confirmed that breast augmentation was the most requested procedure last year, with more than 286,000 operations performed. Prior research on breast augmentation found that the operation helped patients improve self-esteem and overall quality of life, but a boost in arousal and sexuality had never been examined until this recent study.
The study reviewed four areas of sexual health among 45 breast augmentation patients, who answered a questionnaire to enable assessment of sexuality prior and post surgery. Post-operative outcomes were followed up at two months, four months and 18 months after the operation. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate each patient’s outcomes in terms of arousal, sexual desire, vaginal atrophy and sexual satisfaction.
According to the ASPS study, women reported a significant increase in sexual satisfaction and stimulation at four and 18 months post breast augmentation, when compared to pre-operative values.
New York’s best plastic surgeons agree that patient satisfaction is one of the most crucial elements to surgery success, whether for breast augmentation or any other type of body contouring procedure. Results from this recent study complement earlier research on breast enhancement and patient outcomes, in which 98 percent of women said the surgery met or exceeded their expectations. Patients reported higher self-esteem and other psychological benefits to lead researcher, Dr. Eric Swanson.
Before their breast augmentation, 86 percent of participants say they were self-conscious about the shape or size of their breasts, but after the procedure this number dwindled to just 13 percent. The study followed patients for five years after their surgeries, recording data every month on the recovery process, complications and results. Most women told researchers they felt back to normal just 25 days after their surgery, with only one percent of the 225 subjects complaining of dissatisfaction with her scar placement.
Some of the most common motives for breast augmentation in New York include uneven size or shape of the breasts or a decrease in size after childbirth and breast feeding.
