Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation can add definition to the jaw line and profile, and refine the contour of the face to create a more aesthetically balanced look. Chin augmentations are minimally invasive surgeries that add silicone or porous polyethylene implants in front of, or just beneath, the chin bone. More of Dr. Loeb’s patients choose to have chin implants than just about any other cosmetic procedure.

New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Loeb performs cosmetic surgery in his private Fifth Avenue office in Manhattan.

Planning your chin implant in New York City

The best candidates for chin augmentation are those who have recessive or undersized chins, with normal teeth occlusion, or those with an overly rounded jaw or neck line. During your one-on-one consultation with NYC-based plastic surgeon Dr. Loeb, a careful review of your medical history and exam will be performed. He will speak to you about the benefits of chin implants, and discuss your expectations for the surgery. If you choose to have a chin augmentation performed, Dr. Loeb will help you select the type, size and shape of chin implant that will best achieve your desired look. Because a chin augmentation is frequently performed in conjunction with facial liposuction, rhinoplasty, or other procedures, Dr. Loeb may guide you in choosing additional enhancements.

Procedure

Chin augmentation, like most cosmetic surgical procedures are performed by Dr. Loeb, takes place in the surgeon’s private surgical suite in Manhattan. Before the surgery, which will take approximately one hour, you will receive a local anesthetic. A small incision will be made in your mouth or beneath your chin. Silicone or porous polyethylene chin implants, sized and shaped to suit your face, will be inserted through a small pocket in front of the jaw bone. A porous polyethylene or silicone chin implant will be adhered to the bone, and possibly sculpted by Dr. Loeb to best complement the existing anatomy of your jaw and lower face. Stitches may be placed in the mouth and, in some instances, beneath the chin. Tapes beneath the chin are used to reduce swelling.

Recovery

Recovery time generally takes a week to 10 days. You’ll be able to go home the same day as your surgery. Stitches placed in the mouth will dissolve within a week, and it’s normal to experience bruising and swelling in the lower face and neck for seven to 10 days. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, most patients return to work within three to seven days after completion. Some patients may experience some degree of numbness in their chin for up to three months.

Related procedures in NYC

Other facial cosmetic procedures such as a facelift, neck lift, liposuction of the neck, and rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with a chin augmentation.
