Social Media Makeovers Drive Requests for Plastic Surgery

Jenn Fusion | February 9, 2015 | Posted in Facelift

rhinoplasty before and after photosDid you ever see someone’s social media “selfie” and think, “That looks nothing like the person in real life!”? The practice of taking photos at certain angles to make a person look better is nothing new, but the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery says there has been a significant increase in “social-media makeover” procedures over recent years. Rather than bringing in photos of celebrities, patients are meeting with New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Loeb with selfie pics and saying they want to look like themselves – only a slightly better version.

New Yorkers look to bring out their idealized selves

“I wanted to look like that all the time,” 56-year-old New Jersey mom Geri Hubner told the NY Daily News, pointing out her lack of neck fat in selfie photos. “I should have done this years ago,” she concluded after a quick and painless recovery from her neck lift. She also opted for Botox and Juvederm injections to see her cheekbones again. “It’s put a real skip in my step,” she says.

“I wanted to see that person in real life,” 32-year-old Nancy Chacon said of her selfie photos, which employed sepia tones or special filters to hide blemishes. Thanks to laser treatments and photofacial therapy, Chacon has a much younger-looking face. All in all, she shelled out $1,000 for a brand new face, but “it was worth it,” she concludes.

Cosmetic surgery patients seek natural results

“The majority of my patients aren’t asking for Keira Knightley’s lips or Kim Kardashian’s nose,” says Dr. Thomas Loeb. “They want to look natural, like themselves – but better.”

Many patients are under 30 years old looking for rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery, but Dr. Loeb explains that there are also many minimally-invasive procedures that can be done on a person’s lunch break for under $1,000.

The results are so natural that family and friends simply concede that their loved one “looks great.” It simply looks as if they’ve lost a little weight, gotten a good night’s rest, or had a facial.

Test-drive a new look before meeting with Dr. Thomas Loeb

Before meeting with a plastic surgeon, you can try using soft, warm Photoshop filters  to highlight the skin and erase imperfections. Blurred filters also work well. If you find you’re taking a lot of these photos or black-and-white shots, you may be a good candidate for fractional and laser skin resurfacing.

If you purse your lips and hold the camera from a high angle to accent your cheekbones, hide a double-chin, and emphasize your eyes, then you may be able to get this look from something as simple as a dermal filler injection. Patients who need a little more to look younger may opt for eyelid surgery, a neck lift, or full facelift. Mini-lifts are also available if you are worried about scarring or taking time off from work.

Meeting with Dr. Thomas Loeb for a one-on-one consultation is the best way to determine your options. As an experienced and versatile board-certified Manhattan plastic surgeon, he offers a wide range of treatments to best help you achieve the natural look you desire. He is fully committed to helping you find the most affordable and minimally invasive path to your idealized self. Call 212-327-3700 to request an appointment.
