Two types of breast implants

There are two types of breast implants available: saline and silicone. Both are enclosed in a silicone shell, but saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater, while silicone implants are filled with as plastic gel. By law, patients must be 18 years old to receive saline breast implants, and at least 22 for silicone implants.

Pros and cons of saline and silicone

Saline implants are less expensive and considered the safer implant choice, as rupture is much easier to detect. They also require smaller incisions, since they can be inserted before filling, and therefore produce a less conspicuous scar. However, saline implants are harder than breast tissue, so they may not feel as natural as their silicone counterpart. Additionally, saline implants are more prone to rippling.

Many women tend to prefer the feel of silicone, which better replicates the softness and bounce of natural breasts. However, silicone breast implants cost about $1,000 more than saline, and they also require a longer incision and resulting scar. Additionally, silicone implants have higher health risks if they leak. In fact, the FDA halted the sale of silicone breast implants from 1992 through 2006, when the agency approved two companies (Allergan and Mentor) to produce silicone implants. Since then, the FDA has also cleared manufacturer Sientra for silicone implants.
