Having a Nose Job in NYC?

Andrew | October 27, 2012 | Posted in Rhinoplasty Surgery

One of the most common plastic surgeries in New York is rhinoplasty, or simply- a nose job. Since the nose is such a prominent and functional part of the face, it is extremely important that candidates have all the answers they need to make an informed decision not only about the procedure itself, but also about the surgeon they choose to perform it.

Like all of the surgical procedures he performs, New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Loeb considers rhinoplasty a certain art form. In addition to creating a more pleasing facial contour, a nose job may also be used to straighten a deviated septum or obstructions inside the nose to make breathing easier. The options regarding size and shape are virtually limitless and every slightest nuance can create a dramatically different impact. That is why it is so crucial that patients considering having a nose job in NYC explore their options and review them carefully with their surgeon.  Dr. Loeb offers in depth personal consultation for all patients to ensure that their new nose lives up every expectation.

Various techniques used by New York City plastic surgeon

One of the most important distinctions patients should understand going in to surgery is the technique that will be employed by the surgeon.  Some options for rhinoplasty in New York include:

  • Closed Procedure – By far the most popular choice for most procedures, this surgery involves incisions inside the nose, where scarring will not become a part of the patient’s appearance. The closed technique is also a faster way to perform rhinoplasty procedures. However, it since visibility of the area to be addressed is limited, make sure your surgeon has the requisite skill level.
  • Open Procedure – This type of surgery also involves incisions inside the nose, but an incision is also made in the cartilage that separates the nostrils, known as the columella. When this area is opened up, it is easier for the surgeon to see the interior of the nose and make the proper adjustments. In some cases, this procedure can lead to a more natural looking result, but the patient will have a small scar on the columella from the initial incision.
  • Nasal Implants – When the patient requires augmentation of a particular area of the nose, implants may be considered. However, a NYC plastic surgeon will typically prefer to use the patient’s own tissue for the implant, rather than a synthetic option. This tissue or cartilage will usually come from the patient’s nasal cartilage, but if this is not available, cartilage from the ear or rib cage may also be used. When these locations are not an option, synthetic implants can also be considered. However, doctors do not typically choose this option, except as a last resort, since they do not provide the same results as natural material.
