How Can I Heal Faster After Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a common facial plastic surgery performed by NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Thomas W. Loeb.

Body contouring has revolutionized the way we think about self-care and aesthetic transformations. It’s more than just a cosmetic procedure—it’s a path to enhanced confidence and self-expression.

Eyelid surgery is a common facial plastic surgery performed by NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Thomas W. Loeb. Many clients come to his private suite with concerns of heavy upper eyelids, puffiness, sagging, wrinkles, and other cosmetic or health concerns.

Whatever the reason for the procedure, patients typically come with questions regarding recovery and other post-surgery care. As with any other surgical procedure, recovery takes time—but there are ways that you can help your eyes heal sooner and more comfortably after eyelid surgery.

What to do after eyelid surgery

Recommendations for a quicker recovery:

  • Apply coldcompresses regularly. Directly after your procedure, we’ll begin applyingcold compresses every 20 minutes. Consistently reapplying cold pressure, especially within the first 48 hours, will dramatically decrease swelling andbruising.
  • Avoidexercising, sports and lifting heavy objects. Overexerting yourself tooquickly after surgery can cause fluid build-up in the eyes, prolonging yourrecovery time. Even if you are feeling better, you should avoid strenuousactivity for the first two weeks after surgery. That said, you do not need tostay completely bedridden, and may benefit from light walking. You should alsokeep your head upright during this time by avoiding bending forward or liftingheavy objects, and by propping your head up with extra pillows as you sleep.
  • Stay outof the sun. You want to avoid exposing your scars to sunlight or tanningbeds for up to six weeks after surgery. When you go outside, be sure to use agood pair of sunglasses that block UV rays.
  • Do nottake aspirin or ibuprofen. To reduce the risk of excessive bleeding, thesemedications should be avoided at least 10 days before surgery and up to 7 days after. If you are stillexperiencing some pain or discomfort, you may take paracetamol or a painreliever prescribed to you by Dr. Loeb. You will also be provided eyedrops tohelp with any dryness or irritation.

Other commonquestions and concerns

In addition to achieving a quick, successful recovery, patients often ask about their ability to perform normal, daily tasks. Some ofthe most common questions include:

Can I shower after upper eyelid surgery?

It is important not to get your eyelids wet after surgery, and you should only wash below the neck until your doctor has cleared you to take a full shower (usually within 5 days after surgery). We recommend dry shampoo, face wipes and soft washcloths to clean your hair and facial areas—with extra care to avoid your eye area.

When can I begin wearing makeup again?

You should wait at least two weeks aftersurgery before applying any makeup in or around the eye. This is important to preventany irritation, infections or adverse reactions. After about six weeks, you mayalso start to apply scar treatment cream and other eye creams as well.

Will I be able to drive?

You will not be able to drive immediatelyfollowing surgery, but depending on your recovery, you may be able to startdriving again within the first week—though it is recommended to check with yourinsurance guidelines and to have another valid driver accompany you during thefirst week post-surgery.
