Combined Breast Lift & Augmentation Procedure Is Safe, Study Says

A new study released in the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, examined whether there might be an increase in complications from combined cosmetic procedures.

Body contouring has revolutionized the way we think about self-care and aesthetic transformations. It’s more than just a cosmetic procedure—it’s a path to enhanced confidence and self-expression.

A new study released in the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, examined whether there might be an increase in complications from combined cosmetic procedures. The researchers concluded that the complication rates and re-operation rates were comparable among women undergoing a combined breast augmentation and lift surgery and those who had the procedures separately. The researchers also noted that women typically prefer to have multiple procedures performed simultaneously, rather than undergoing two or more procedures at different times.

The study on breast implants and lifts

The researchers involved in the study performed a combined total of 430 breast lift procedures (also called a mastopexy) from 2005 to 2009. Of those, 332 women had a combined lift and augmentation with breast implants. The average rate of complications among women having a combined procedure was approximately 23 percent, which is comparable to the rate of complications among those having staged procedures.

In addition to the reassuring safety data, it’s worth noting that women who choose individual procedures instead of combined will run the general risks of surgery twice, such as complications from anesthesia. This means that a combined procedure may offer added benefits. However, this approach does make the procedure more difficult for the plastic surgeon. Patients are advised to select a qualified surgeon who has prior experience in performing both procedures simultaneously.
