How Many Nose Jobs Go Wrong?

Having a nose job is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the U.S. and across the world. Nearly 44,000 nose jobs were performed last year, according to 2022 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. When performed by an experienced rhinoplasty specialist, nose reshaping surgery can produce exceptional results, whether removing a hump, refining the nasal tip or correcting a bridge that’s too wide or otherwise incongruous with other facial features.

Nose jobs are among the most challenging operative procedures, requiring technical expertise and a good sense of aesthetics. No two nose jobs are the same, and each surgery requires careful planning to achieve a desirable outcome.

What percentage of nose jobs go wrong?

A nose job can go wrong in a number of ways, but postoperative deformities are considered the main risk. There are 5% to 15% of cases that require revision surgery. To minimize the potential need for revision surgery, patients should choose providers who regularly perform these procedures and who have expert knowledge of both the internal and external anatomy and function of the nose.

Failed nose jobs produce more challenges

Revision rhinoplasty is designed to address unfavorable results following a failed nose job. The procedure, which is more complex than a primary nose job, tasks your surgeon with difficult conditions and unpredictable healing, resulting from:

  • Scar tissue formation
  • Less tissue and cartilage to work with
  • Compromised supportive structures and blood flow
  • Septum damage and/or breathing problems
  • Poor healing
  • New deformities that developed post-operatively

A poorly executed nose job will leave patients with unnatural results (example: a nose that is shaved down excessively ala Michael Jackson), or a nose that does not complement the rest of the face. An expertly performed nose job, on the other hand, blends seamlessly with facial features and is no longer a distraction that draws negative attention.

In short, it is your surgeon’s experience, artistic vision and technical training that are critical for ensuring the best possible outcome. Never choose your doctor based on price and always look for a board-certified surgeon with a solid track record of successful rhinoplasties.
