Mini Facelift

A mini facelift is used to eradicate excess fat in the neck, and to repair weakened neck muscles, sagging skin, and prominent jowls and bands around the neck. During this surgical procedure, loose skin is trimmed and tightened, thereby fortifying deep muscles and connective tissues to give sharper definition to the face, and to accentuate jaw lines that have become hidden or overly rounded.

NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Loeb performs neck lifts and other facial plastic surgery in his private Manhattan office suite.

A neck lift restores your face to a more naturally youthful, sleek appearance. Depending on your specific circumstances and desired results, the plastic surgeon may perform a neck lift in conjunction with liposuction, or with a total face lift.

The neck lift procedure (platysmaplasty) is similar to a mini face lift (also known as a short scar lift), which not only resolves those issues with excess skin and fat in the neck region, but also firms and defines the shape of the lower face.

Prominent New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas W. Loeb performs both neck lift as well as mini face lift in his Fifth Avenue office and can help patients make the most appropriate decision based on their current appearance. For example, Dr. Loeb may recommend a mini face lift over a neck lift to patients with more substantial deposits of fat in their necks and lower face regions.

Planning a Mini Facelift

Before scheduling either surgery, Dr. Loeb will meet with you in his private suite on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for a private consultation to review the various options available, to make sure that your expectations for the final outcome are realistic, and to cover any unanswered questions. Dr. Loeb will not only conduct a thorough physical examination of the skin and tissues of your face, but will also review your medical history to make sure nothing stands in the way of achieving optimal results.

Common concerns that may be resolved by a mini facelift include:

  • “Turkey waddle” neck
  • Drooping bands in the muscles of the neck
  • Prominent jowls
  • Double chin
  • Excess of skin after massive weight loss

Dr. Loeb will outline pre-surgery skin care treatment for you to follow, to ensure the most effective result of the procedure. This skin care regiment may include moisturizers, antioxidant creams, retinols, and strong sunblock. If you exhibit significant wrinkling on the skin of the neck, Dr. Loeb may suggest a laser resurfacing treatment to be conducted prior to neck lift surgery.

Procedure

Depending on your preference, Dr. Loeb will perform the  surgery with general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with light sedation. Dr. Loeb makes very tiny incisions that are hidden beneath the chin. If liposuction is performed in conjunction with the neck lift surgery, excess fat is gently teased out via a suction device through thin, straw-like tubes inserted through the surgical incisions. Underlying neck tissues and muscles are made taut, and unwanted fat and folds of skin are trimmed and redraped to create a more define, shapely appearance.

In cases where drooping neck folds are more problematic, a mini lift (or “short scar” lift) will be performed. In this case, the incision is hidden behind the natural curvature of the ear.

Depending on the procedure(s) performed, and whether or not the neck lift is performed in combination with liposuction or a face lift, the surgery will last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours.

Recovery

A small measure of swelling and bruising may be experienced for up to 10 days post-surgery. Dr. Loeb may recommend that you wear a compression device during the days following the procedure, to promote blood circulation and quick healing. Depending on the extent of the surgery, patients are able to return to work within 5-12 days of the procedure. Light aerobic activity may be resumed 7-10 days afterwards, and more rigorous activities should be avoided for at least 3 weeks. The final outcome of the procedure may not be completely apparent until three months after surgery, thought the rejuvenating results will last for up to 10 years.
