Ear Reshaping

Ear reshaping, or otoplasty, reduces or reforms over-sized and abnormally shaped ears, making them more proportionate to the head and face. The surgery addresses other common complaints such as protruding ears and ears with irregular folds (sometimes referred to as “bat ears”). Leading Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Loeb, performs otoplasty on adults as well as children. Some parents choose ear reshaping for their children rather than subject them to unpleasant ridicule from classmates. The results of ear reshaping are often dramatic both visually and emotionally, as patients report significantly improved self-confidence in the aftermath of surgery.

Planning

In private consultation, you and Dr. Loeb will look closely at the shape of your ears and discuss your desired outcome for the procedure–at this point, ear reshaping before & after photos can give you an accurate idea of the amazing results Dr. Loeb can achieve.

The doctor will take relevant measurements, review your medical history, and assess your current health condition. Dr. Loeb will also review the various techniques involved in otoplasty and explain which ones will most help improve the overall look and congruency of your face. During the consultation, you are encouraged to ask any questions and raise any concerns you have about the procedure.

Procedure

Dr. Loeb uses a variety of techniques to correct the ears, depending on the condition and desired outcome. Otoplasty techniques include cartilage rotation, cartilage suturing, scoring and reduction. Prior to surgery, Dr. Loeb will have chosen the appropriate technique. The procedure takes place in Dr. Loeb’s private surgical suite in his Fifth Avenue office in New York. Otoplasty usually lasts between one and three hours.

Recovery

Dr. Loeb typically recommends taking a week off of work following ear reshaping surgery. Immediately after surgery, patients are allowed to go home with a friend or family member. The original head dressing will be removed after about a week. Dr. Loeb will then provide you with a polar fleece or terry cloth headband that can be worn at night for approximately six weeks. Swelling and bruising may persist for up to three weeks, but you may return to normal activity three or four days after the surgery. It is not uncommon to experience numbness of the ears although this side effect will eventually go away. Dr. Loeb will meet with you several times throughout the weeks and months following to monitor healing.

Related procedures

Unlike other procedures, an otoplasty is generally an isolated procedure. However, an ear reshaping can be combined with rhinoplasty, cheek augmentation, fat transfer, liposuction, or eyelid lift.
