PermaLip

PermaLip implants are a popular lip augmentation procedure, with lasting appeal in both Europe and the U.S. The FDA-approved implants are a solution for those who’ve had unsatisfactory results with repeated collagen and fat filler injections. A PermaLip implant is made of soft, solid silicone and is inserted through two tiny slits at the end of each lip. It is not an injection — but rather, an implant that is meant to be permanent. Because the material is inert, the risk of infection, bleeding or other complications is very low.

PermaLip implants come in different lengths, shapes and sizes that are all designed to look and feel very natural. This procedure is especially helpful in older patients whose lips have thinned out over the years. Many patients also like that it’s a “set it and forget it” augmentation that requires no maintenance on their part.

Planning for permanent lip augmentation in New York City

The price is another benefit of permanent lip augmentation in New York City. Compared to injections that comes with a repeated cost over multiple treatments, PermaLip can be paid for with a one-time upfront cost.  As part of the overall process, patients sit down with NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Loeb, to discuss the look they want and he will go over all the important details of the procedure. Patients are asked to stop taking aspirin, Motrin or any other herbal supplements several weeks prior. Smokers do not necessarily need to quit before the procedure, but they must be prepared to abstain from smoking afterward, so the PermaLip does not become misaligned. Patients begin taking anti-viral medication three days beforehand to diminish the chance of developing a cold sore. Just before the implant is inserted, they are given an oral antibiotic and steroid to reduce the likelihood of swelling.

The PermaLip procedure takes just 30 minutes and is performed right here in Dr. Loeb’s office, under local anesthesia so patients won’t feel a thing. Once the incisions are made at the corner of the mouth, a tunneler is used to create the pocket and the implant is then inserted and positioned. Finally, the incisions are closed using dissolvable stitches.

Recovery for PermaLip implants

Most people go about their daily activities, but take two or three days off work to allow time for the swelling to subside completely. Patients are encouraged to apply ice, continue taking steroids and their oral antibiotic. Prescription pain medications are available, but the pain is generally very minimal and any discomfort, bruising and swelling typically resolves in a week. PermaLip enhancement leaves behind no visible scars and a very natural, smooth look.

Related procedures: PermaLip vs. collagen injections and fat grafting

PermaLip implants may not be for everyone. People who have never had a lip augmentation procedure before may want to start with injectable fillers to determine if a fuller lip is the look that is truly desired. Collagen, Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse can produce a soft, natural look under local anesthesia in just 15 minutes and requires no time off work. Injections can be easily customized to give the volume preferred. The effects last from 4 to 8 months – at which time another injection will be needed to maintain the look. Fat grafting is a more permanent option, but this type of procedure runs a greater risk of scarring, is less likely to yield a smooth look, and is more difficult to undo. Generally, PermaLip implants are a better solution for the individual who wants permanent volume and fullness of the lips.
