Do Gynecologists Recommend Labiaplasty?

Thomas Loeb | June 14, 2024 | Posted in Labiaplasty Surgery

Plastic surgeries are often performed to enhance one’s aesthetic appearance, but they may also be performed to improve one’s comfort level or bodily function. The labiaplasty can fall into all categories, depending on the particular problems the patient is experiencing.

A labiaplasty reduces the size and modifies the shape of the inner and/or outer “lips” of the vagina—the labia minora and labia majora, respectively.

Every woman has her own personal reasons for choosing to get a labiaplasty. Regardless of your reasons, it’s important to be fully informed when making a decision about plastic surgery and to seek the guidance of a top labiaplasty surgeon and perhaps a gynecologist, as well.

Reasonable Expectations

Many women decide to have a labiaplasty because they have a certain idea of what labia “ought” to look like, even though having labia that are a bit on the large side is perfectly common and normal—particularly among mature women. If you’re thinking of having the procedure purely due to cosmetic reasons, consider talking to your gynecologist about whether the size of your labia falls outside the typical range.

It’s important to have reasonable expectations—both for your pre-surgical appearance and for your desired surgical results. However, if you find that the size of your labia negatively impacts your self-esteem and self-confidence, then a gynecologist might recommend that you consider surgery.

Effects of Childbirth and Aging

Some women do indeed have labia that are larger than is typical due to the effects of aging and childbirth. Both aging and childbirth can contribute to less-than-ideal skin laxity, which can cause excess skin and tissues.

A labiaplasty will involve removing the excess in order to tighten the labia, creating a more youthful appearance. Some gynecologists may recommend a labiaplasty to women who have had one or more children, and/or to those who have noticed age-related changes.

Comfort and Function

Another reason why a gynecologist might recommend a labiaplasty is to improve a woman’s comfort and sexual function. Excess amounts of skin and tissue down there can sometimes cause irritation, particularly when wearing tight clothing. Furthermore, some women with very large labia may feel self-conscious when wearing bathing suits.

Large labia can also result in chafing during sexual activity. A labiaplasty may be performed to enhance pleasure.

Self-Confidence

Ultimately, one of the most compelling reasons why women seek a labiaplasty (and why gynecologists may recommend it) is if the labia’s large or disproportionate appearance is affecting the individual’s self-image and, therefore, her self-confidence.

As long as you have reasonable expectations for the results of the procedure and are choosing to move forward with the surgery to please yourself—rather than to make someone else happy—then a labiaplasty may be the right choice for you. You should also be committed to understanding and following post-discharge instructions.
