Why Is the Tip of My Nose So Bulbous After Rhinoplasty?

Why is my nose bulbous after rhinoplasty

The tip of your nose might seem excessively bulbous after rhinoplasty because it takes a long time for the swelling to subside—which is normal! As the swelling goes down, you’ll be able to see your results improving and your nose acquiring the look you want.

Rhinoplasty is an intensive, complicated plastic surgery. Before undergoing it (or any type of plastic surgery) it’s important to develop a thorough understanding of what to expect and how to prepare. In NYC, rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Loeb always takes the time to thoroughly address his patient’s concerns and ensure they are fully informed before having any procedure.

Why Is My Nose Bulbous Following a Nose Job?

Many types of plastic surgeries offer a comparatively quick recovery time, which means you can also expect to see the results fairly soon. While the initial recovery phase after a rhinoplasty might only take a couple of weeks, it actually takes much longer for the full healing to be completed.

The general rule of thumb is that the final results from a rhinoplasty cannot be seen until up to one year following surgery because it typically takes that long for the residual swelling to subside. However, the tip of the nose is a bit different.

The tip of the nose holds onto swelling longer than the other areas. Furthermore, your swelling in this area may last longer if you have thicker skin or if you had an open rhinoplasty (a surgical technique), rather than a closed rhinoplasty.

For these reasons, the tip of your nose may be more bulbous than you would like for longer than a year. You might not see final results in that area until the two-year mark, particularly if your surgeon worked extensively on the tip.

A Typical Recovery Timeline

It can be hard to wait for your final results following a rhinoplasty, but you may find it helpful to know what to expect and when. Every patient heals a little differently, of course, but in general the following recovery timeline may apply:

  • 1 to 2 weeks – During the initial recovery stage, you should take at least one week off work. There will be significant swelling.
  • 3 to 4 months – The majority of the swelling (up to 75) will be resolved, but asymmetry and a bulbous appearance may still be present.
  • 9 to 12 months – Many patients will see their residual swelling completely gone by the 12-month mark, while others will still have some swelling lingering.
  • 12 to 24 months – Some patients might still see lingering swelling in the tip of the nose.
