Laser Skin Resurfacing

New York City cosmetic surgeon Dr. Thomas Loeb performs skin rejuvenation treatments at his private office on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Laser skin resurfacing helps reverse the effects of sun exposure, age, genetics and the environment, restoring the supple texture and tones of youth. Laser resurfacing is now considered to be the most advanced skin resurfacing technique, often preferred over dermabrasion and chemical peels due to easier recovery and minimal discomfort. Dr. Loeb often administers laser resurfacing as a series of treatments, and can use it to address pigmented spots on the skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and red vascular marks on the nose and cheeks.

Planning laser skin resurfacing in NYC

During your initial consultation at his Manhattan office, Dr. Loeb will discuss available laser skin resurfacing methods and techniques. You will also review laser resurfacing before & after photos to get a better idea of the great results you can expect.

After you make a decision based on which is best for you and your desired results, Dr. Loeb will recommend the most effective preparation for your procedure. For non-ablative laser resurfacing, which is recommended for all skin types, tanning prior to treatment is not recommended. For C02 ablative treatments, the skin’s pigment must be minimized as much as possible, so Dr. Loeb will recommend strong sun protection with UV-A and –B blocking; lightening cream and retinol may also be utilized to assure the most even, natural and successful results.

Non-Ablative Laser Treatments

Non-ablative laser skin resurfacing is an excellent option for improving skin tone and texture with minimal recovery time. Non-ablative lasers utilize deep heating, not vaporization, to bypass the skin’s surface and stimulate collagen production and reorganization to improve your skin. The Fraxel Dual 1550/1927 platform is the premier system for today’s non-ablative treatments, and treats microscopic sections of your skin with every pulse, allowing Dr. Loeb to target only the spots you identify and leaving the surrounding areas intact. The result is supple skin and improved tone with minimal downtime.

Fraxel laser resurfacing treats sun damage (photodamage), mild and moderate periorbital wrinkles, textural irregularities, actinic keratosis, surgical scars, melisma, and acne scars.

Ablative Laser Treatments

CO2 laser resurfacing, also known as an ablative treatment, utilizes a laser pulse to ablate, or vaporize, targeted sections of the skin. Ablative laser skin resurfacing is a good choice for patients seeking substantial changes in skin tone or texture, such as treatment of deep wrinkles or pigment balancing. This is an excellent option for targeting specific facial areas, especially the upper lip and eyelids, as well as areas of the neck and décolletage (cleavage).

Recovery

With non-ablative laser skin resurfacing, because of the pinpoint-precise treatment and a topical anesthetic, you will experience little discomfort and minimal recovery time. You may resume normal activities within one to three days following each treatment. For most patients, an average of two to four sessions are required to achieve their desired results. However, depending on your goals, anatomy and skin condition, your required number of treatments may vary.

During ablative treatments, Dr. Loeb only treats specified surfaces with the laser, which helps minimize downtime. Nevertheless, CO2 laser skin resurfacing is a more intense procedure than non-ablative resurfacing, and therefore requires more recovery time. For instance, Dr. Loeb may request that you refrain from strenuous activity for a week after the procedure. However, the benefit is faster, more visible results.
