Plastic Surgery News: Marilyn Monroe’s Medical Records Go To Auction

Jenn Fusion | October 22, 2013 | Posted in Rhinoplasty Surgery

Marilyn Monroe is widely regarded as the quintessential American sex symbol. Yet, a few items heading to auction next month have made plastic surgery news as they reveal that the beloved starlet visited Hollywood cosmetic surgeon Michael Gurdin to have work done.

It is expected that the six X-rays and file of doctor’s notes from 1950 to 1962 will fetch between $15,000 and $30,000 at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California from November 9-10.

“Nobody really thought about Marilyn Monroe having plastic surgery. It was always speculation – did she or didn’t she?” Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, told NY Daily News. “They thought she was such a natural beauty, they didn’t want to believe.”

Did Marilyn Monroe break her nose?

Plastic surgery procedures were still very taboo in the 1950s and 1960s. The X-rays of frontal facial bones, nasal bone profiles and dental images — dated for June 7, 1962 — reveal that Monroe saw Gurdin following a late night fall. The following day, 20th Century Fox fired her for constant absences from the set of “Something’s Got To Give.” Just two months later, she died at age 36 of a barbiturate overdose. Radiology notes indicate that there was no damage to Monroe’s nose from the fall, but a recent evaluation reveals that she did, indeed, have a minute fracture at the time.

A chin deformity would have made plastic surgery news decades ago

A self-published memoir by Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Norman Leaf reported that Monroe had cosmetic surgery on her chin in 1950 – prior to the release of her most successful films, including “How to Marry a Millionaire” (1953), “The Seven Year Itch” (1955), and “Some Like It Hot” (1959). She also had a slight rhinoplasty done on the tip of her nose at that time.

Gurdin’s notes confirm that the actress complained about a “chin deformity” in 1958 when her previous implant began to shift. According to the records, the 5 ft. 6 inch, 115-pound actress also suffered from neutropenia – a low level of white blood cells – in 1956 while in England and had an ectopic pregnancy in 1957 while married to famous playwright Arthur Miller.
