New Study Shows Plastic Surgery Can Help Self-Esteem

Ava Lawson | March 21, 2013 | Posted in Body

In light of a recent European study, more New Yorkers may consider the benefits of plastic surgery in NYC – as the results can help patients attain a better balance with how they feel on the inside and how they look on the outside. Researchers from the Ruhr Universität and the University of Basel found that post-op plastic surgery patients reported a boost in self-esteem along with an increased enjoyment of life.

Plastic surgery in NYC can improve self confidence

According to findings published in the Clinical Psychological Science, the researchers discovered that the psychological effects of cosmetic surgery were largely positive among patients who had realistic expectations. The study analyzed 544 first-time plastic surgery patients with two other groups including 1,000 people who said they had never been interested in cosmetic surgery, and a group of 264 people who had previously considered surgery but never went through with it. Of the entire study group, women made up the bulk of the patients who opted for plastic surgery – at 87 percent. The study found that only 12 percent of the group who opted for cosmetic surgery had unrealistic goals – anticipating the surgery would change their lives completely and/or solve their problems. The American Psychological Association has found that plastic surgery patients with highly unreasonable expectations are more likely to report negative outcomes after the procedures.

The German psychologists evaluated the effects of plastic surgery on the study group by testing them before the procedure, and followed up with additional tests three, six and twelve months after the surgery. The researchers said that when compared against people who had opted against plastic surgery, the group who had chosen to have the surgery “felt healthier, were less anxious, had developed more self-esteem and found the operated body feature in particular, but also their body as a whole, more attractive.”

While cosmetic surgery in New York City may not be for everyone, it can offer fantastic results for those who wish to address a particular feature they’re unhappy with, or women who want an overhaul after multiple pregnancies. As always, it’s recommended to discuss your goals and expectations with a plastic surgeon and explore all options, both surgical and non-invasive, before embarking on any type of plastic surgery.
