Popularity of Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures Continues to Rise

Andrew | March 6, 2013 | Posted in Skin Care

Many people are seeking the rejuvenated and youthful appearance that can be achieved with plastic surgery NYC and other parts of the country, based on the annual report released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In 2012, a total of 14.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed, which accounts for a 5 percent increase from the previous year. The continued growth of cosmetic surgery during the past three years is largely attributed to more people choosing to have minimally invasive procedures, according to the ASPS.

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures

There was a 6 percent increase in non-surgical procedures with more than 13 million being performed by plastic surgeons last year. The ASPS reports that Botox is the most popular non-surgical treatment with 6.1 million procedures performed in 2012. Dermal fillers were the second most popular with 2 million procedures performed. Plastic surgeons provided 1.1 million chemical peel and laser hair removal treatments while microdermabrasion was performed slightly less than 1 million times.

The cost of cosmetic surgery in New York and other states is a major factor when people choose which procedures they want. According to Gregory Evans, the President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more people are choosing to have minimally invasive procedures since they have less discretionary income. Many types of non-invasivel and surgical treatments are not covered by health insurance but men and women still want to delay the signs of aging in a manner that fits their budget.

The data from the ASPS statistical report may also indicate that people are taking better care of themselves, so they will use minimally invasive treatments before getting cosmetic surgery. Non-surgical cosmetic injections such as Restylane, Radiesse and Juvederm fillers help eliminate fine lines and shallow scarring while restoring lost facial volume. The treatments are also convenient since they can often be performed in less than an hour and clients are able to resume their normal activities on the same day or the next day.

Top cosmetic surgery procedures

Overall, there was a 2 percent decrease in cosmetic surgeries. The ASPS report states that 1.6 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in 2012. Breast augmentation remained the top plastic surgery procedure with 286,274 being performed. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) ranked second with 242,684 procedures in total. Eyelid surgery, liposuction and facelifts were the third, fourth, and fifth most popular surgeries performed last year.

Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia, increased by 5 percent with nearly 21,000 procedures performed. More men want to eliminate signs of obesity or reduce the effects of genetics on their physical appearance. Another factor that influences men’s decisions to get cosmetic procedures is the desire to remain competitive in the workplace and wanting to remain aesthetically appealing to their partners or while they are dating. As surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures have become more socially accepted, the number of men getting these procedures has increased.
