Andrew | October 12, 2012 | Posted in Body

Drooping upper lids, crow’s feet and puffiness under the eyes can give you a tired, older appearance, even if you are getting sufficient shut-eye. Eyelid surgery, also referred to as blepharoplasty, can address all of those issues, to provide a rejuvenated, younger appearance. Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas W. Loeb can correct several common complaints with varied eyelid surgical techniques.

Eyelid Surgery in NYC

Eyelid surgery can be done on both the upper and lower lids. Some of the common issues this procedure is used to address include:

  • Sagging upper eyelids that can interfere with vision
  • Drooping lower lids that reveals the white of the eye
  • Chronic “baggy eye” that doesn’t respond to rest
  • Fine lines around the lower lid

An eye lift effectively tightens skin around the eye. However, it is not the first choice for fine lines, especially crow’s feet that form in the outer corner of the eye. This procedure is also not recommended for brightening dark circles under the eye. In some cases a combination of eyelid surgery and another procedure like Botox or laser skin resurfacing will produce the best possible results.  Candidates considering having eyelid surgery in NYC can weigh the various pros and cons of the surgical and nonsurgical procedures in private consultation with Dr. Loeb.

What to expect of eye lift procedure

Eyelid surgery on the upper lid typically involves an incision in the natural crease of the eye, so it will not be easily visible after the procedure. Lower lid incisions are generally made along the lash line, where they will also be relatively hidden. Dr. Loeb performs the surgery in his own private surgical suite with the patient under local anesthetic and sedation. The procedure may take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the specific procedure to be performed. Some patients may elect to have additional body contouring procedures at the same time, thereby increasing the amount of time in surgery and recovery.

Recovery and Results

For most patients, recovery after eyelid surgery takes about one week, during which time patients are instructed to get plenty of rest and avoid regular activity. After this time, most patients can return to work and other activities. However, strenuous exercise should generally be avoided for up to three weeks after the procedure.

Results are typically seen after several weeks and will remain for some time. Upper eyelid surgery may need to be repeated after a number of years, while lower eyelid surgery is generally considered permanent.
