AESTHETIC NEWS
Electing to have cosmetic surgery of any kind is a major decision, and finding the right surgeon to do it is a choice you have to live with for years – if not your entire life. Good results can lead to a more confident you, but a poor outcome at the hands of an incompetent doctor means additional time, expenses, and unnecessary stress on your part.
Consider these criteria when vetting doctors to find the best plastic surgeon in New York City.
Keep this list in a handy place when you are interviewing prospective candidates to perform your procedure.
Many patients are under the mistaken assumption that state medical boards ensure that surgeons are qualified to do what they say they can do – but in reality, the government does NOT require them to be specifically trained in the procedures they advertise. This is especially prevalent in the field of plastic surgery, as many doctors with general surgery or other training opt to practice cosmetic surgery as it yields more profits. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) formed a board dedicated to certification to prevent tragic consequences from occurring.
One person’s idea of beauty may be completely different from another’s – that’s why you just can’t trust a friend or family member’s recommendation. Try to determine the cosmetic surgeon’s aesthetic sense by looking at before and after photos, paying close attention to those patients who have similar facial features or body type as you. Are their results consistent? Which surgeon’s results appeal to you personally?
Different surgeries require different skills. For example, operating on a nose with bone and cartilage is much different than a breast with its soft tissue; that’s why many doctors have subspecialties. Ask them how they trained for the procedure such as liposuction, how many years they’ve been doing it, and how many times they’ve performed the specific procedure.
Customer service counts! Make sure you are served promptly and treated well. Is the staff friendly and helpful? Do they give you written materials about the procedure? Do you understand their fee schedule? Do they call you back in a reasonable amount of time? It is important that you feel comfortable dealing with both the surgeon and their staff as you will be discussing and disclosure personal details about your medical history.
Ask the surgeon where they perform the procedure and whether it is an accredited operating facility; look for those which have an AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO certification. The same holds true for the anesthetist – you want either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or a Board Certified Anesthesiologist administering your anesthesia.
