New Lip Enhancement Drug Approved By FDA
AESTHETIC NEWS
VOGUE listed “statement lips” as one of their 10 Big Beauty Trends of 2016. With lips like Miley Cyrus and Kylie Jenner’s capturing the headlines, it’s no surprise. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports 2.4 million dermal filler procedures were performed in 2015. These minimally invasive procedures are only second to Botox. If you’re looking for a pluckier pout in New York City, there are many options available at Dr. Thomas Loeb’s Manhattan office.
Juvederm Vobella XC has been a popular lip enhancement product in Europe for more than five years and now it is finally approved in U.S. markets – available in October 2016. With this new injection, a filler called Vycross can restore lost volume in the lips and cheeks, as well as smooth moderate-to-severe wrinkles like perioral rhytids and nasolabial folds. Like other injections, the procedure takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour and has very minimal side effects – like swelling and numbness – that subside after a day.
Dr. Thomas W. Loeb MD has been working with lip enhancement products for more than a decade. In addition to offering Juvederm products, Dr. Loeb also offers Restylane, another hyaluronic acid filler. Both products are safe, FDA approved, effective, and about the same cost. Due to its higher concentration levels, Juvederm tends to last longer – up to 12 months – compared to Restylane’s 6-9 months. However, Restylane may work better for instances where more localized volume correction is needed. Ultimately, most plastic surgeons agree that the difference between Juvederm and Restylane is like the difference between Coke and Pepsi – basically the same thing, but a matter of personal preference.
“Patients who have gone the injection route in the past but wants longer lasting effects may find what they’re looking for with implants,” says Dr. Loeb. He explains that Gortex or SoftForm silicone implants can be easily administered using local anesthesia and very tiny incisions. Lip implants can be done right in Dr. Loeb’s office and full recovery usually takes place within two weeks. Results can be permanent – unless the patient decides to have the implant removed.
Many different types of practitioners can train to perform lip enhancement injections — nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians, for instance. Plastic surgeons like Dr. Loeb have the most advanced training and specialized knowledge in treatments like Juvederm and Restylane. Surgeons can also offer “the next level” of lip enhancement with implants for better patient satisfaction. While complications like allergic reactions are rare, there is peace of mind in knowing a surgeon with emergency training is overseeing your recovery.
