Cheek Augmentation

Cheek augmentation is a procedure that enhances the facial contour by giving more definition to cheekbones and restoring youthful volume to skin that may have diminished due to age, heredity, sun damage or other factors. Treatment may involve a variety of techniques, including fat transfer, injectable fillers (such as Restylane or Juvederm) or cheek implants. Fat transfer and dermal fillers are non-invasive procedures administered by injection, while cheek implants are inserted during a surgical procedure. In consultation with Dr. Thomas Loeb, you will have the option of choosing which procedure is optimal to bring the desired symmetry and shapeliness to your face.

Planning

Dr. Loeb is among New York City’s most well-known plastic surgeons. In consultation with the doctor, you  will discuss your options for cheek augmentation, as well as your reasons for wanting the procedure. The best treatment will vary based on the specific needs of the patient. Cheek implants, made from either silicone or high-density polyethylene, offer a more permanent solution, while fillers can last for anywhere between four months and two years. Dr. Loeb will also take a full medical history, to ensure there are no underlying conditions that could impact the success of your surgery.

Cheek augmentation can be selected for the following purposes:

  • Provide additional volume to the facial contour
  • Produce a stronger cheek bone
  • Replace volume lost during the aging process
  • Create facial balance

Dr. Loeb will provide before and after photos and a personalized computer imaging session as part of your consultation, so that you have accurate expectations of what cheek augmentation procedures can accomplish. In many cases, cheek augmentation can bring a dramatic new angularity to the face.

Procedure

Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are injected into the skin in small amounts with a very tiny needle. Dr. Loeb performs the procedure with topical or local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Results are visible immediately, and you can be back at work the next day.

The insertion of cheek implants is typically performed in Dr. Loeb’s private surgical suite in Manhattan. You may be given either a local anesthetic with sedation, or general anesthesia. Incisions for the implants are routinely made through the mouth, to eliminate visible scarring afterward. However, some patients require incisions under the lower eyelid or on the hairline instead. Dr. Loeb will carefully place the implants into their proper position, secure them to the cheek, and refine their shape as needed to achieve your desired appearance.

Once the implants are in place, incisions are closed using tiny sutures. The procedure typically takes around one hour to complete, although more time may be needed if additional treatments will be completed at the same time.

Recovery

Downtime is minimal for cheek fillers, with most patients back to work the next day. With cheek implants, you can resume normal activities within a week after surgery, although strenuous physical activity should be avoided for up to three weeks. It is normal to have swelling and tightness around the surgical site for a number of days, though any discomfort can be effectively managed through pain medication. If your incisions are inside your mouth, Dr. Loeb may request that you stick with a soft diet for a few days, to allow for the area to heal.

Related Procedures

Cheek augmentation may be performed alone or in combination with other facial surgeries, including buccal fat removal, rhinoplasty, and other cosmetic surgeries.
