Minimal Recovery for Breast Augmentation

Thomas Loeb | December 7, 2012 | Posted in Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can produce dramatic results, giving your breasts a fuller shape and youthful firmness. The effectiveness of breast enhancement surgery speaks for itself: It is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure across the country. A 2022 report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recorded nearly 300,000 nationwide instances of surgical breast augmentation in one year. Whilst the procedure itself is fairly straightforward, it does require patients to go through a recovery period, usually lasting around two weeks.

Breast augmentation is performed under a general anesthetic. As a result, you can expect to feel tired and groggy for a day or two after surgery. As the incisions heal, the chest area will experience swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness. The soreness will last for one or two weeks, and can be ameliorated with pain medication. Itchiness around the incision sites is also common. You will see scarring, but this should fade within a year of the surgery.

Breast augmentation New York: recovery period

Adhering to a few rules will minimize the recovery period and pain. You should take one to two weeks off work and any other obligations. Restrict your movements to allow the chest area to heal. In particular, avoid bending down or reaching above your head. Strenuous activity such as sports should be avoided for up to six weeks. Tell your surgeon about any medications you are on, as they may interfere with recovery.

Tips for reducing swelling

Swelling of the breast tissue is one of the most common side effects reported by patients. There are a few ways to minimize the swelling:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat healthily and avoid sodium
  • Rest, and gradually ease back into your normal routine
  • Gently massage the chest area to improve circulation and reduce fluid retention

Post-surgery treatment

After breast augmentation surgery, your chest tissue will need time to grow accustomed to the weight of the implants. You should wear a surgical bra or compression garment to support the tissue.
